Nadal overwhelms Lopez to conform the berth in quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal had little trouble disposing of countryman and friend Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth time and third in a row at the US Open. The No. 1 seed took an early lead and was rarely in trouble in a match that started after 11 p.m. thanks to a marathon day session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"To be in quarterfinals of the US Open without lose a set and without lose a serve, two things must work really well: the concentration and the serve," said Nadal, whose much talked about serve topped out at 135 mph. "I think I am playing better and better every day, and I had to play a little bit better this match."

"He's a very complete player," Nadal said of Verdasco. "He has all the shots and he's playing very well, no? Much better than he did last months, so gonna be very difficult match. I saw him play today, and I saw him play against Nalbandian the other day. He's playing very good tennis, so gonna be a very interesting match. I have to play aggressive, to play well."

Nadal moved to within three victories of his first US Open title which would complete his career Grand Slam.
