New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has been presented with an honorary Master of Science (Sport and Exercise Science) by Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton.

"It's a great honour. It's been a while since I've had to sit an exam so I'm very glad I haven't had to work too hard to get this," Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

Vettori also said that before his cricket career rapidly became a full-time commitment, he had planned to do a course in health science with an eye toward a pharmacy degree.

Waikato Institute of Technology Chief Executive Mark Flowers said that Vettori was extremely deserving of the honorary qualification.

"Since becoming New Zealand's youngest Test representative at just 18, Daniel has taken more than 300 Test wickets and 3000 Test runs. As Black Caps captain, he is known as an exceptional leader and one of the most considered and intelligent readers of the game," Flowers said.

"Also of immense importance is Daniel's dedication to being a role model for our young people and his commitment in giving back to the community. This is our way of giving something back to him," he added.

Vettori now joins Waikato Institute of Technology's elite group of honoraries, which include Sir Edmund Hillary, Dame Te Atairangikaahu, Colin Meads and the Topp Twins.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said on Thursday any player caught cheating should be banned from cricket for life to protect the game's integrity.

Vettori's comment follow the suspension of three Pakistan players — captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif — for allegedly bowling deliberate no-balls in a Test against England at Lord's last month.

"If they are proved, those allegations, then it has to be the harshest possible (punishment) and that's a life ban," Vettori told Radio New Zealand.

"Whenever incidents like (these) recently have come under the spotlight then people are going to question every single game that Pakistan played in," Vettori said.

"The key for cricket is to clean it up as quickly as possible, so that people don't turn up at the game and think there's something going on. Cricket needs to be squeaky clean." Pakistan are scheduled to tour New Zealand in December.

A hapless India suffered its fourth defeat in the tournament, losing 0-3 to New Zealand in its final pool A match of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup here.

Skipper Kayla Sharland struck twice in the 44th and 55th minutes, while Katie Glynn scored in the 52nd after India succumbed to a yellow card fever in the second half as first Subhadra Pradhan was sent off then Chanchan Thokchom.

The first half was a goalless affair even though the Black Sticks were clearly a better side as they took four shots on goal and two penalty corners but in vain.

Krystal Forgesson saw a high shot from the left end up in the back of the net via an Indian defender, but the goal was disallowed as her initial effort was adjudged to have been travelling wide of the target.

"It is great to come away with the win and while it was not the prettiest hockey at the end of the day we have three points," Sharland said.

Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson clinched seven wickets between them to achieve the victory target for their nation. Chasing target of 266 from 45 overs, Australia wrapped up the New Zealand side in 43.2 overs .The last wicket partnership of Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee added 14 runs to take their total to 253.
Australia levelled the five-game series at one-all with Johnson pocketing 4 wickets for 51 runs and Harris grabbing 3-34 from 8.2 overs.
Skipper Ricky Ponting said,"I'm proud of the way the guys hung in there tonight. The game could have gone either way right towards the end. Our bowlers stuck to their guns stuck to their guns pretty well today.”
Mike Hussey proved to be the best Australian batsmen for the second successive match, hitting 56 in a total of 7-273.Hussey had a 101-run partnership stand with Cameron White after Australia had slumped to 4-116 in the 24th over. The third ODI will be played in Hamilton on Tuesday.
