Simon rolls to Metz success

Gilles Simon secured the Open de Moselle in Metz with a comfortable straight-sets win in the final.

The Frenchman savoured victory on home turf after easily seeing off the challenge of German qualifier Mischa Zverev 6-3 6-2 in just 67 minutes.

World number 41 Simon has suffered a disrupted season with a knee injury affecting his form and ranking, but his first title since the Bangkok trophy last October is set to lift him up the rankings.

Simon claimed the sole break of serve in the opening set in the sixth game before holding the rest of the way.

Zverev, at 155 the lowest ranked player to reach an ATP final this season, enjoyed a 2-0 career record against Simon coming into the match but never looked like extending that sequence as the Frenchman took charge.

Trailing 2-1 in the second set, Simon turned the screw to win five straight games and complete a one-sided victory.

Rafael Nadal receives a warm reception in Thailand

Thailand has given a grand welcome to the world number one Rafael Nadal upon his arrival on Wednesday for participation in a championship in Bangkok.

The 24-year-old Rafa will play in the Thailand Open tennis tournament that will start from Monday. After recently capturing his United States Open title in New York, Rafa was warmly welcomed with garlands at the airport and was led through a multitude of reporters and journalists by police and tennis officials.

The world number one tennis ace had been a late withdrawal from the championship the last two seasons; however he is injury-free for this year’s tournament.

The Manacor-born tennis star is regarded as one of the greatest-ever tennis player on the tour. He has so far captured a total of nine Grand Slam trophies in his professional career. The Spaniard completed his career Grand Slam recently by winning his very first U.S Open title at the Flushing Meadows. He entered the city of New York, as seeded number one to win the crown. The left-hander got the better of Denis Istomin, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Fernando Verdasco, Feliciano Lopez as well as Mikhail Youzhny without even missing a single set to make his way into the final of the year’s last major event. In the title battle, the 1.85 meters tall Rafa did well to get the better of his Serbian tennis opponent, Novak Djokovic who is ranked number two in the world by the Association of tennis professionals (ATP). The Spaniard sealed victory after a total of four sets in New York. The final match score was 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Rafa’s win also clinched the season-end number one ranking for 2010, making Rafael just the third tennis contender after Ivan Lendl back in 1989 and the Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer back in 2009, to recapture the season-end top-ranking after having lost it. Nadal has played extremely well throughout this season after coming back from his injury in May, and has successfully won a total of three Grand Slam titles, the French Open, Wimbledon and the United States Open tennis tournament. The Spaniard is therefore, expected to do well at the Thailand Open as well.

After some days at beach resort, Rafa will also meet Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is the Prime Minister of Thailand and is also expected to visit Parliament next week before turning to the game of tennis.

World number one Nadal confirms Queen's Club entry

World number one Rafael Nadal has confirmed he will play in the AEGON Championships at Queen's Club next June.

Nadal won the event in 2008 and has gone on to reach the Wimbledon final shortly after all four of his appearances at the warm-up event.

And the Spaniard, who recently became the first man to win consecutive French Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles since Rod Laver achieved the feat in 1969, is looking forward to returning.

"I love playing at the Queen's Club because it is a traditional club," said Nadal.

"Every time I have played there I have felt very welcome because of the British people and their support, and because of the tournament organisers who are so good at their job.

"After the French Open, it is very important for me to feel the grass under my feet as soon as possible."

Murray appointing new coach ahead of ATP world tour

British No.1 Andy Murray, who sacked his coach in July, has said that he is no closer to appointing a new coach ahead of his return to ATP World Tour action next month.

He had hoped to find a successor to Miles Maclagan before the China Open in Beijing, which begins on October 4.

"The situation is the same as it was before the US Open. I'm still looking into it and trying to find the best person that can help me. I'm going to have to be patient with it, take my time a little bit and I'm sure I'll find someone that will help me," Murray said.

"I haven't spoken to anybody yet but I've spoken to the guys that I work with and I've spoken to my mum about the people that I might like to work with," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

"I've got to try and find out the availability, how many weeks people are willing to do and make the decision based on all the information," Murray added.

Maclagan oversaw Murray's rise to the top of the game after linking up with the Scot in 2007.
